A Very Stinky Subject

One guess about what we have living under our porch! Yes, it's a skunk! He's actually been living there for quite a while. We noticed stinky last summer. We've seen him walking around. One time last summer I took a walk with my kids at night. As we were heading home we smelled a skunk. "Uh oh, something got it!", we said. As we got closer to home, the smell got even stronger. When I got home, the inside of my house reeked! "Did someone leave the door open!", I said frantically. I even looked around the house. We finally figured out he got my cat. Luckily it wasn't too bad. I gave him a tomato sauce bath in the yard, and stuck him in the garage to sleep that night. I think he sprayed right outside my screen door. It took days to air out the house. I hoped that the skunk would just leave when winter came.

A couple of days ago, I was on my computer (blogging of course), when I heard a little scratching noise in my living room. I was a little afraid because I've heard that noise before and it was a mouse. I tiptoed into the living room and didn't see anything. The next day I was on the computer again, heard the noise again, but this time it was in my computer room where I was! I turned around and noticed my daughter's balloon, slowly moving around and scratching the ceiling. Phew! No animal!

Well, the next morning we woke up and our basement smelled like a skunk! Was there really a skunk in the house? I decided not to panick and to just carefully check every corner of the basement after the kids got off to school. My daughter walked out of the house to go to school, there he was! He was just standing by the corner of my porch! I was so happy! He's not in my basement! But this means, he's still here.

I tried once before to fill in the hole he dug under my porch. He just knawed his way back in (or maybe it was out). I want him gone! How can we get rid of him? I could pay someone to take him out, but I really don't want to spend the money. My sister said her husband will come over and take care of him. Uh, I don't think so. My husband's friend said just to set up a trap outside of his hole. Once he's inside, wait until he settles down. Then just drape a towel over the trap. Take him out to the country. Open the trap up, and let him walk away. Yah right! I'm too afraid to do that! I guess I'll pay for someone to come get him eventually. Last night I tried my mom's idea with how she got rid of her chipmunk in her heater vent. She just sprayed Tilex in it. The chipmunk ran out and never came back. Last night I sprayed bleach all around the porch. This morning, my daughter left for school, and motioned to me, "There he is!". He was in the hole. I guess the bleach didn't work. Does anyone know how to get rid of him? My mom tried to tell me that skunks make nice pets. "Then you can have him!"

Oh man! Good Luck with that one!
Sorry, I've got no ideas.

No idea. But personally, I would pay the money to have someone get rid of it! YICK!!!

I cannot stand the smell of skunk. My Hubby always teases me as we drive past a skunk smell by breathing deeply and saying, "Aaaaaaaaah!"

I think he's psycho. Really.

Good luck!!

:-O Gosh. We don't have skunks in the UK so I've never encountered this problem. I wish you luck with it! x

Try googling it. Why do people put mothballs in their yard? Maybe it might work. No clue.

I've been trying to get rid of flying squirrels in my apex beam for a long time. Tried moth balls, roach spray, nothing works. If you come up with a solution to the skunk, perhaps it will be something I can apply to the wretched squirrels.

I don't know how to get rid of skunks but I just thought of a wonderful book my daughter and I enjoyed last year called Kildee House. It's a Newberry award book about a man who has skunks in his house- very funny. Good luck :)

I really don't know how one gets rid of a skunk. I think I'd call an animal control place and they will relocate him out in the woods somewhere FAR from your home. That odor is the absolute worst, I'm sorry for your poor cat!

Hey, I'm laughing at myself right now! (very easy to do, actually!) I've received several comments from people who think I've lost my marbles, so I just wanted to let you know that I am NOT friends with Bossy Mom, nor will I ever BE friends with her. It was my (feeble) attempt at sarcasm gone wrong, I guess! I put a little disclaimer at the bottom of my post now so that I don't confuse anyone else. She really thinks she can "save" me from my bad wife/mother ways, pretty funny! :)

I got nothing. But I can say that I might be the only person on the planet that LIKES the smell of skunk. I really do. I wouldn't want to wear it, take a bath in it, marry it, or anything, but I do like a little wiff from time to time.

Oh this is a problem. My mom had armadillo under her deck for 2 years and finally we think we have gotten rid of all of them. You could go to a feed-and-seed type store (do you have one of those near you) - they often have repellants for crittars. With armadillo it is a repellant that has deer urine in it - but I'll bet they have some sort of treatment for skunks too. You also could put pepper or moth balls - that sometimes works for some critters. Good luck - what a mess. Kellan

I have absolutely no advice to give you...none. I am stumped. I am glad for you, though, that he wasn't behind you in the computer room.

God bless...I think you'll need it!

Ugh! How frustrating. Unfortunately I am of no help at all. I typed in "skunk removal" in Google. Who knows, I'd get a professional! Good luck.

Deer urine. You can buy a spray bottle at your local hardware store. Create a boundary around your house with the urine.

My dad is a Bob Villa type of guy. Hope it works.

I think this is one time when it is worth it to spend the money!

I used to work for a home builder. One of our home owners complained about a scratching noise coming from under her master tub. She had lived in the house for two months. We had to take apart some cabinetry and found...Yep, you guessed it. A mamma skunk. Somehow she got trapped there. There was evidence that she had some babies and actually ate them to stay alive. We called a professional to move the traumatized mama skunk back to the wild.

We had skunks under our house in the early 80's, and their smell seeped up into my parents bedroom closet where all my mom's work clothes and suits were, so everything smelled like skunk (she ended up needing to get all new clothes!)

They tried mothballs, but skunk + mothball smell = worse than just plain skunk. Not to mention that mothballs are toxic. In the end, my dad bought a trap, and got rid of every last one.

I know I could never bring myself to kill them, and transporting skunks in the family car might not be a risk you're willing to take. I'd call animal control (and put some of your tax dollars to good use. ;0)).

We learned a lot about skunks back then. My aunt LOVED the smell of skunk, and belonged to some 'skunk smellers society', lol. Also, the molecular breakdown of skunk spray is reputed to be only one molecule difference from the scent of a strawberry (according to the same aunt).

I'm not sure how to get rid of stinky - the only wild animals I have to deal with are the turkey and deer who eat all my flowers!

Good luck!

Oh man~ that's stinks!

We have some in the neighborhood somewhere, but I can't figure out where. I was told we had some under the prch of our house way before we bought it, so when I saw that something had dug a hole, I patched that up fast, haven't seen any movement since. One neighbor said that a whole family of possums came out of the street drain one night~lovely!
